Normal shedding vs. hair fall

Hair grows in cycles, so losing around 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. It becomes a concern when you notice clearly more than usual for several weeks, a thinner ponytail, a wider parting, or patches.

Common causes of hair fall

  • After fever or illness: heavy shedding often starts 2 to 3 months after a high fever, such as dengue, or after surgery. This usually settles on its own over several months.
  • After pregnancy: many mothers notice shedding a few months after giving birth. This is common and usually temporary.
  • Stress: exams, work pressure, or major life events can trigger extra shedding.
  • Nutrition: low iron, low protein, or crash dieting can affect hair.
  • Hormones and health conditions: thyroid problems and PCOS are among the conditions linked to hair changes.
  • Genetics: gradual thinning that runs in the family, in both men and women.
  • Hair damage: tight hairstyles, heat, bleaching, and chemical straightening can cause breakage.

When to see a doctor

  • Sudden or very heavy hair fall
  • Round bald patches
  • Redness, pain, scaling, or sores on the scalp
  • Hair fall with tiredness, weight changes, or irregular periods
  • Shedding that hasn't improved after about 6 months

A doctor or dermatologist can check for causes like low iron or thyroid problems with a simple blood test.

What you can do at home

  1. Eat regular, balanced meals with enough protein.
  2. Keep your scalp clean, especially in hot, humid weather.
  3. Be gentle: loosen tight hairstyles and reduce heat styling.
  4. Be patient: hair grows slowly, so changes take a few months to show.

Scalp care to support your routine

Shampoo supports scalp care. It isn't a treatment for medical causes of hair loss.
