Oily scalp

Signs: hair looks greasy within a day, the scalp feels heavy, and you may notice itching or yellowish flakes.

What helps: wash every 1 to 2 days, shampoo twice, and choose a deep-cleansing shampoo. Avoid leaving heavy oils on the scalp for long.

Dry scalp

Signs: the scalp feels tight or itchy, with small, dry, white flakes.

What helps: use lukewarm rather than hot water, choose a gentle shampoo, avoid over-washing, and rinse well. Air-conditioning and hot showers can make dryness worse.

Sensitive or irritated scalp

Signs: redness, stinging, or itching, especially after new products or styling.

What helps: keep your routine simple, patch-test new products, avoid scratching, and be gentle with heat and chemical treatments.

Combination scalp

Signs: an oily scalp with dry or frizzy lengths.

What helps: Focus shampoo on the scalp and keep conditioner or hair serum on the mid-lengths and ends only.

Why Sri Lanka's climate matters

Heat, humidity, sweat, helmets, and long commutes mean oil and build-up collect on the scalp quickly. Many scalps here feel oily and itchy at the roots while the hair itself feels dry. A good routine balances both.

Match your shampoo to your scalp.

Good to know: red, crusty, or painful patches, or flaking that doesn't improve, should be checked by a doctor or dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my scalp type?
Check your scalp the day after washing. If it already looks greasy, it's likely oily. If it feels tight and itchy with fine white flakes, it's likely dry.

Can my scalp be oily and my hair dry?
Yes, this is very common. Cleanse the scalp well and keep nourishing products on the lengths.
