In many Sri Lankan homes, hair oiling is a weekly ritual passed down from mothers and grandmothers. Coconut oil softens hair and makes it shine. But oil left on the scalp for too long can also trap sweat and build up. The answer is not to stop oiling. It is to wash it out properly.
The benefits of hair oiling
- Softer lengths: oil coats the hair and reduces dryness
- Less breakage: oiled hair is easier to detangle
- A relaxing ritual: a scalp massage feels good and helps you slow down
The problem with leaving it too long
In Sri Lanka's heat, oil on the scalp mixes with sweat and dust. Left for days, it can clog the scalp, make it itchy or flaky, and leave hair looking flat. A clean scalp is just as important as nourished hair.
A simple oiling routine
- Warm a small amount of oil between your palms.
- Massage it gently into your scalp and through the lengths.
- Leave it on for 30 minutes to 2 hours, or overnight at most.
- Wash it out the same day or the next morning.

How to wash out hair oil properly
- Apply shampoo before water: put a little shampoo onto your oiled roots first, then add water. This helps break up the oil.
- First wash: lather and rinse to remove most of the oil.
- Second wash: apply a gentle shampoo such as KUNDAL Caffeine Shampoo to your scalp and leave it on for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly until your scalp feels clean and light.
A sulfate-free shampoo cleans the scalp without harsh stripping, so a double wash will not leave your hair dry or rough.

Tips
- Less is more: a teaspoon or two is enough for most hair.
- Oily scalp? Focus the oil on the lengths and use less on the scalp.
- Use a scalp brush: it helps lift oil from the roots. The KUNDAL Scalp Massage Shampoo Brush has soft silicone bristles.
